Pam and I (along with our daughter Sarah) just got back from a mini vacation in Georgian Bay. Of course, as we usually do, we listened to a lot of music as we travelled, and even did a little singing together. Since our kids were toddlers we have found that singing, and listening to music makes a trip so much more enjoyable. Especially when you hear a song that triggers special memories.
There’s just something about music that does something to your mind and soul.
Did you know that music can help you speed up your recovery in sickness? Did you know that when you sing your body releases endorphins that make you feel better? Singing also decreases the stress hormones (cortisol) so that you feel more relaxed. When you sing in a group, your brain releases oxytocin which is a bonding hormone (in other words, when we sing together, we become attached to those who sing with us.)
Just a few quotes about the power of music…
“Music is the universal language of mankind.” –Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
“Where words fail, music speaks.” –Hans Christian Andersen
“Music is the moonlight in the gloomy night of life.” ― Jean Paul Friedrich Richter
“I find that whatever life throws at me, music softens the blow.” -Bryce W. Anderson
And what about that special song, you know, the one that when it comes on the radio or you hear somebody singing it, or it just pops into your mind… that just triggers sentimental memories? Many of us would probably have several “trigger” songs that evoke some emotion or special feelings.
So, that is my reflection question this evening…
“CAN YOU SHARE A SONG THAT (FOR ANY REASON) IS SPECIAL TO YOU? And if you like, tell us why that song is meaningful to you.”
